A world class course

"Outstanding. Invaluable. Revealing"

Our clients choice of words - not ours.

Scotwork delivers its world-class training and consulting services from 30 offices located around the world. We can provide training at almost any suitable location in 17 different languages.

People can be taught about a process by reading about it or by being told about it; "ability" can only be improved through practice. The approach used by Scotwork on our Negotiating Skills Training courses is to allow participants to demonstrate their existing levels of ability and then to coach them by reinforcing the good behaviours and eliminating the bad.

We give participants a framework within which the sometimes, apparently, chaotic nature of negotiations always fit, a map of the negotiating landscape, and then furnish them with relevant key skills tips, techniques and behaviours that allow them to navigate that map, with greater fluency and ability.

To do this we typically engage in classroom learning type techniques for 15-20% of the time we are in session. The remaining 80-85% of the time is in practice or mock negotiations. We have developed a library of cases which will highlight the most common forms of negotiation conflict and engage participants by asking them to negotiate in real time whilst they are filmed, allowing the tutorial team to give insight into different options they could have pursued, and alternative strategies to employ. The experienced tutors are then able to apply this learning to the real life issues that the participants face.

One of the measures of success must be people's ability to apply the techniques successfully back in the workplace and for any improvement to be long lasting. Our research shows that not only do the participants apply the techniques, but because they produce results, they keep on using them. In a survey of the participants' line managers conducted 6 months after the course, 50% of respondents said that the benefits gained from attending the course were still increasing. We also recognise that for learning to be effective it has to be memorable, immediately applicable and entertaining. Our use of an easily remembered map of the process, strong visual imagery and anecdotes, extensive use of video recording and replay, combine to have an impact.

"A humbling, necessary & invaluable experience that I would recommend to all who wish to improve their capability to negotiate".

Michael Anderson - Business Evaluation and Economics - BHP Billiton
